About Susan Shollenberger — Independent Insurance Agent, Milton, Delaware

Independent by Choice

Susan didn't start in insurance. She spent 17 years in mortgage brokerage, working with buyers, lenders, and title companies on some of the most complicated transactions you can imagine — coastal properties, investment purchases, vacation homes with unusual financing. She learned how lenders think, what coverage they require at closing, and what happens when a policy doesn't meet escrow requirements. That background didn't leave when she got her insurance license. It comes up every week.

When she transitioned into insurance, she joined Nationwide as a captive agent, then built a book of business as a Farmers Resident Agent — earning recognition at the award level before making the decision to go fully independent. Going independent meant giving up the brand name and the built-in marketing. What she got in return was the ability to work for her clients instead of a carrier. She hasn't looked back.

The Career Arc

Behind the Agency

Every agent has a story. Susan's happens to be useful to the people she serves.

Step 1:
17 Years in Mortgage Brokerage

Before insurance, Susan worked in mortgage lending — helping buyers navigate financing, lender requirements, and the paperwork reality of closing on a home. That experience gave her a working knowledge of how lenders evaluate properties, what escrow-mandated coverage looks like, and why the gap between a standard policy and a lender-required policy matters at the worst possible moment.

Step 2:
Captive Agent at Nationwide

Her first insurance role was as a captive agent with Nationwide. She learned the business, built a client base, and developed the operational habits that still run the agency today. But she recognized early that a single carrier's product line would limit what she could do for clients with more complex or coastal property needs.

Step 3:
Award-Winning Farmers Resident Agent

At Farmers, Susan hit award-level production — recognition that reflected a growing book of business and a referral-driven practice. More importantly, she refined her approach to coastal and high-value property placements during this period.

Step 4:
Fully Independent — Susan Shollenberger Insurance Agency

Going independent gave Susan access to a broader set of carriers, including specialty markets for coastal, high-wind, and flood coverage that captive agents simply cannot reach. If you knew her as Blue Eagle Insure, nothing has changed except the name — same agent, same number, same relationships.

Licensed Where You Need Coverage — Not Just Where It's Convenient

Susan is licensed in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. That's not a credential collected for the wall. It's a practical reality for clients along the Delmarva Peninsula — where a family might own a primary home in one state, a beach house in another, and a rental property in a third.

One agent who can write all of it means fewer handoffs, fewer gaps, and one person who actually knows your full picture.

She Lives Here. That's Not Incidental.

Susan is a beach area resident and a golfer — which means she's in the same communities, on the same courses, and at the same local spots as many of the people she insures. When a nor'easter tracks up the coast and clients start calling, she's not advising from a distance. She knows what that storm does to properties in these ZIP codes because she's watching it from the same place they are.

That kind of familiarity doesn't show up on a license. But it shapes how she advises clients on coverage decisions — and it's part of why a significant portion of her book of business is coastal property in Sussex County, Delaware and Worcester County, Maryland.
